About Surgery and Anaesthesiology

The Department of Surgery and Anaesthesiology was established in 2014 in anticipation of the training needs for the Maseno University Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, (MBChB), programme. The changing needs of surgical training in the MBChB and other programs necessitate a more elaborate training with an eye for innovation and a perspective of the more diverse and modern modes of patient care worldwide.

To this end the department is anchored on offering a firm, broad and innovative approach to surgery by our students. The department currently undertakes six undergraduate courses for the MBChB programme, participates in three undergraduate programs being undertaken by other departments and also participates in the training of residents in the Family Medicine master of medicines programme. The department has an established research group with ongoing research projects. We endeavour to partner with several organisations to broaden the research component in our training programme and allow exchange programs for our students.

We pride ourselves in having a structured department that offers our students the mentorship required to successfully complete their programmes with the desired competencies in surgery.  We aspire to initiate residency programmes in surgical and anaesthesia specialties in the next two years.
