About the Department

Welcome to the Department of Medical Laboratory Science website! We endeavor to provide outstanding training in Medical Laboratory Science in the country and across the globe. In particular, our Department has focused training on hands-on laboratory practices by integrating research, education and embracing the emergence of cutting-edge diagnostics (including molecular and genomic pathology).

The department takes pride in ensuring that the graduates are adequately prepared to provide Evidence-based laboratory medicine that focuses on the evaluation and use of laboratory test with an overall aim of improving patient outcomes.

Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science was previously a programme within the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the School of Public Health and Community Development (SPHCD). From the year 2019, it became a fully-fledged department in the School of Medicine (SOM), Maseno University.

The programme offered in our department is regulated by Commission for University Education and the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians’ and Technologists’ Board (KMLTTB).

Medical Laboratory Scientist also known as Medical Laboratory Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist works closely with medical doctors and they are responsible for analyzing a variety of biological specimens from patients. It is estimated that 70% of medical decisions that informs patient diagnosis, treatment, hospital admission and discharge are based on laboratory test. In addition, Medical Laboratory Science contributions affects 95% of a health system’s costs.

The specialties in Medical Laboratory Science includes Blood Transfusion Science, Clinical Chemistry/Chemical Pathology, Cytopathology, Histopathology, Haematology, Immunology, Medical Bacteriology, Medical Genetics, Medical Parasitology & Entomology, Medical Mycology, and Medical Virology.

Vision.
To be a regional centre of excellence in Medical Laboratory Science training and research, and train innovative healthcare providers with modern laboratory perspectives.

Mission.
Delivering quality education and research, producing highly knowledgeable, skilled, ethical, and valued health professionals. This is achieved using motivated, professional, creative and results orientated faculty resulting in a healthier Kenya.
