About Medical Biochemistry

The Department was established in 2011 with a two-year curriculum course work at the School of Medicine Maseno University. We offer medical biochemistry courses for the students undertaking MBChB and Nursing Sciences during their first two years of training. The medical biochemistry course is intended to expose students to the molecular point of view of the structure and function of normal and diseased organisms. Our courses are intensive and specifically designed to enhance a  student’s medical training. Core areas covered include; basic organic chemistry,  structural biochemistry, metabolism, molecular biology, molecular genetics,  molecular virology, neurochemistry, biochemical endocrinology, drug metabolism,  parasite, and bacterial biochemistry. Additionally, the department offers an undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry (with IT) program with the intent to produce competent and professionally qualified biochemists with competitive and applicable skills to enable them to contribute effectively to the social,  intellectual, and academic development nationally and internationally. The department has three faculty members of diverse backgrounds. A very committed five technical staff support the faculty.

Our Vision The Department of excellence in discovery and dissemination of knowledge of the molecular and cellular processes that underlie normal and pathological functions in medicine and other allied health sciences and excellence in transferring such knowledge, skills and attitude to students, staff, health professionals and the general public.
Our Mission To discover, harness, apply, disseminate, and preserve knowledge of the molecular and cellular processes that underlie normal and pathological functions in medicine and other allied health sciences for the good of humanity. This programme in Family and Emergency Medicine (FEM) aims to produce unique medical practitioners with advanced knowledge and skills in both disciplines who can assume leadership roles, develop high quality preventative and acute care programs for communities, and directly care for most all acute and chronic medical conditions. These doctors will be well-suited to provide compassionate, effective, patient and community-centered, and cost-effective care to people of all socioeconomic
