About Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology website. This department is an integral part of the school of medicine.

Broadly, Obstetrics is the branch of medicine that is concerned with human pregnancy and its related conditions while Gynaecology is the branch of medicine that concerns itself with the human female reproductive tract its related conditions and fertility. 

 

We offer training to undergraduate students of M.B.Ch.B and a post graduate program that culminates in a Master of Medicine degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (MMed Obs/Gyn)

To be a centre of excellence in Women’s and Reproductive Health training and research.  Working in collaboration with our teaching hospital and partners in discovering, patenting and applying innovative solutions in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

To discover, design, invent, utilise, preserve, teach and propagate knowledge in maternal and reproductive health and to train quality Obstetrics & Gynaecology specialists equipped with adequate knowledge, skills, professional attitudes and competencies in clinical care, preventive medicine, health services management and research

The Course

Undergraduate Programmes

The department teaches and examines two main undergraduate courses 

  • MCS 406 – Junior clerkship in Obstetrics & Gynaecology - Year 4
  • MCS 603 – Senior clerkship in Obstetrics & Gynaecology – Year 6
The Course

Graduate Programmes

Master of Medicine in Obstetrics & Gynaecology

The program is a full-time residency programme primarily located at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, with additional teaching at Kisumu County Hospital, Kisumu and the medical school in Siriba Campus

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must have a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree or its equivalent from a recognised university.

  • Must have completed at least one year of clinical practice post internship;

  • Show evidence of registration, or eligibility to be licensed, by the Kenya Medical Practitioner’s and Dentists Council, (KMPDC), and be on the retention list as at time of application.

  • Provide a certificate of good conduct from the Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council or any equivalent authority from the country of origin if from outside Kenya.

  • Show evidence of proficiency in use of English language.

  • Maintain a valid professional indemnity cover of not less than KES 1,000,000 over the period of clinical training. 

 

Request for applicants is periodically advertised in the university website. Shortlisted candidates are invited for an interview to attest their competency and professionalism.
