Department of Medical Laboratory Science
Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science was previously a programme within the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the School of Public Health and Community Development (SPHCD). From the year 2019, it became a fully-fledged department in the School of Medicine (SOM), Maseno University.
The programme offered in our department is regulated by Commission for University Education and the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians’ and Technologists’ Board (KMLTTB).
Medical Laboratory Scientist also known as Medical Laboratory Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist works closely with medical doctors and they are responsible for analyzing a variety of biological specimens from patients. It is estimated that 70% of medical decisions that informs patient diagnosis, treatment, hospital admission and discharge are based on laboratory test. In addition, Medical Laboratory Science contributions affects 95% of a health system’s costs.
The specialties in Medical Laboratory Science includes Blood Transfusion Science, Clinical Chemistry/Chemical Pathology, Cytopathology, Histopathology, Haematology, Immunology, Medical Bacteriology, Medical Genetics, Medical Parasitology & Entomology, Medical Mycology, and Medical Virology.

Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science with IT
Common Regulations for admission into Bachelor programmes at Maseno University shall apply.
To be admitted into the Medical Laboratory Science with IT degree programme at Maseno University, the student must:
- Satisfy the minimum University entry requirements of C+ in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with at least C+ in Biology, C+ in Chemistry, C+ in Mathematics or Physics and a C+ in English or Kiswahili or at least C+ in Biological Sciences, Physical sciences or English or Kiswahili.
- Satisfy the senate in all the requirements for bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science and Technology with IT programme.
- Have a minimum of 2 principal passes in science subjects in IGCE/GCE.
- Have a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from an institution recognised by the University Senate and registered with the KMLTTB.
- Have a Higher National Diploma, (HND), in Medical Laboratory Technology from an institution recognised by the University Senate and registered with the KMLTTB.
- Have a Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Biological Science or any other related field recognised by Maseno university senate
